Smoke from the eastern Canada wildfires continues to affect the Northeast as air quality has reached dangerous levels.

The National Weather Service has issued an air quality alert for the entire state of New Jersey through midnight Thursday and has suggested people limit their time outdoors. The service is also recommending that people wear a mask if they have to go outside.

Wildfire smoke can cause sensitive people to experience respiratory symptoms, such as coughing, trouble breathing, wheezing, asthma attacks, headaches, chest pain, scratchy throat and runny nose, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The CDC also said that people with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart disease, those who are pregnant and children may be "especially at risk."
